16th State, Minnesota - 16th Interview, Pinkie Promise with Eleanor Elektra
It just so happened that there was another cross country road tour happening. Three musicians, Minnesota-native Crispin Swank, Brooklyn’s Kaitlin Pelkey who together play in a group called Pinkie Promise, along with Eleanor Elektra from Boston were on their 5th stop on their 18-city music tour across America. I stumbled across a facebook post, checked out their music and liked their experimental drift. There was this mystic-soul, folk vibe about their sound and I wanted to learn more. So I reached out and there were nice enough to do the interview literally right before their show at The Tiny Diner.

The diner had an outdoor patio where people ate, drank and laughed. Surrounded by large bushes and flowers, there was a machine tucked in the back of the bushes behind the Mic area that periodically blew out bubbles. It definitely added to its intimate environment, perfect for an acoustic set, especially the dreamy and jazzy melodies from these three. Eleanor Elektra kicked it off mixing jazz and folkish blues, followed by Pinkie Promise mixing folk rock and dream folk performing until the sun went down.

They had their merchandise booth setup by the entrance, so after their set, with all the change I had in my pockets, I made sure I furthered my support and bought some merch. As they caught up with friends I said my goodbyes and hit the road to the next state.

(From her Bio) In September 2017, Hannah performed the song "Starving" by Hailee Steinfeld for her blind audition for the TV show "The Voice", Season 13. She had 3 chair turns, Adam Levine, Jennifer Hudson and Blake Shelton. Hannah chose team Adam and advanced to the battle round which she won, and then advanced to the Knockout Round, singing "Love on the Brain" by Rhianna. She was stolen by team Jennifer and moved onto the Playoff Rounds and the top 20. She sang "Learn to Let Go" by Keisha and was eliminated from the show just before the live shows.
On American Idol in 2014, she was declared by the Season XIV judges to be one of the 38 most memorable auditions. She advanced to the top 48 and performed at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, CA.

Doug "The Sleeping Bag" Campbell
Doug 'The Sleeping Bag' Campbell is a multi-talented young Independent musician from Louisville, Kentucky. Now in 2018 and only 16, Doug has produced 5 albums within the last two years, each covering a new ground of sub-genres in avant-garde, indie rock, and post rock. Packed with acoustic synergy and DEEP lyrics. Very deep.
A popular Music Magazine Never Nervous from Louisville has stated that his solo projects “blends the earnestness of Elliot Smith with the melancholia and sense of exploration and vulnerability of Mount Eerie”.
His passion for music is not only evident in his growing catalog of his unique sound and style, but also what he's done with his friends outside his studio - cofounding Lo-Fi Lullaby Records, a music collective with his friends that curates several other independent talents with their own unique vibe.
When asked to describe his latest albums, Doug gave a very detailed and thorough response for each - a good look into the origins of his creativity, his sound and his rembrandt-like journey. We're definitely looking forward to his progression.
The Sleeping Bag: My first album, Sadness Eternal, released October 25th, 2016, chronicles the stories of a man I met named, Anthony, in a rehab center. Though I say “chronicles” (I guess in an attempt to sound sophisticated or something), I more so mean represented. The album contains no vocals up until the second-to-last track, in which I retell the story of how he ended up in the rehabilitation center after a drunk driving incident left him badly injured and took his best friend’s life. It’s a short album, but nonetheless and album dedicated to him and his struggle to overcome alcoholism.
My second album released only 4 months after is my longest release to date, at an easy hour and seven minutes. What If You Stayed This Time (the name of the record), tells the story of a boy questioning whether or not his summer has been worth living or not after finding out the girl he’s been chasing the whole time is generally not interested. Looking back on it now it seems like a bit of a stretch, but it contains some of my best writing (I think). And even under a cheesy narrative, I manage to keep the sounds of the album very reserved, aggressive, and somewhat contemplative.
3rd record, No Frustration. Not much story to be told. It’s an album inspired by divorce and what it’s like to be a kid growing up in a broken home. It’s an album that focuses more on musical growth in my progression as a musician, not so much my lyricism, although I do manage to tell a concise story.
4th record, I’m On Your Side. Easily my most personal album. This album truly chronicles the chaotic end of my longest friendship. I don’t know much know how to describe it in words, other than the words I used to describe it at the time of its release, noted on the back of the CD:
I hadn’t originally intended to release YET another album before the end of 2017, but recent events led to rapid songwriting. This album signifies the death of an abusive friendship and each song represents the nails in its coffin; a coffin filled with memories that are useless to me now; memories I once cherished but now dread to recall...
This is a final resting place...Goodbye old Friend...
This album is my most accessible and most well known album to date. Instead of a lo-fi sound quality with distorted guitars throughout. I opted for a storytelling approach and kept it strictly acoustic (for the most part). Lyrics deal with nightmares, murder of the ego, wearing masks, and ultimately, the motif of “where will your family be when you die?” along with “who is your family?”.
My 5th album was set to release June 1st, but the release will most likely have to be pushed back on account of the fact that I am unemployed and currently lack the funds to have CD’s manufactured."

Emily Weisband, best voice in Country / All of music
From performing at local cafe's in Virginia with her sister Anna, to taking her music talents to Nashville, attending Belmont University, the same school where several of other Country stars have graduated from including Brad Paisley, Lee Ann Womack and more, to winning a Grammy in 2017 as a songwriter for Best Contemporary Christian Music Song performed by Lady Antebellum's Hillary Scott, to being the duet partner to one of Country's biggest stars, Luke Bryan, Emily Weisband has stuck to her talented writing and singing capabilities, which has guided to what many artists dream of -- oh and she ain't done yet.
Only just recently graduated from college, and she has already won a Grammy and written for some of Country's biggest stars including Keith Urban, Tim McGraw and more, see her amazing portfolio of credits here. Kiki Halliday is a singer/songwriter based in Los Angeles. Her music pulls together different aspects of blues, pop and soulful sounds to create something that is bright yet vulnerable. She is a lyricist to the core, however she maximizes her sound by pairing uncomplicated chord progressions with words that will take ahold of you, willingly or not, and bring you down beyond the surface. Her live set has a noticeable easygoing, Southern California vibe as she plays the guitar well and interacts with the crowd in a way that’s honest and whole-souled.
Kiki released her first complete work, “The Love Notes EP”, in November 2014. “Love Notes” was recorded in its entirety with Scott Frankfurt (has worked with Whitney Houston, Barbara Streisand, John Legend) at his studio in Woodland Hills, CA. What’s interesting here is that Kiki can move fluidly across genres without seeming too bound to anything. This has allowed her the opportunity to work on projects including a collaboration with LA producer/DJ Matt DiMona on his debut EP, Up All Night, where she co-wrote and sang on the synth, R&B infused track, “Next 2 U” and another with Philadelphia-based hip-hop artist and rapper, Frzy, on his upcoming album God King Slave. Her music has also been featured on the TV show The Young and the Restless, and her song “Beautiful Soul” will be included in the upcoming motion picture I’m Not Ashamed, due out in theaters October 21st.
Kiki continues to put on live shows in the LA and San Diego area- depending on the night you may be able to catch an intimate acoustic session or hear her music come alive during a set with her bandmates. Not only does April Oneill have an amazing voice, that can pretty much go over any style of music which you can here on her Soundcloud, after winning the Hip Hop Music Producter Battle at the 2017 ASCAP #ICreateMusic EXPO, folks are now hip that her music production is also PURE FIRE.
